The panel reads:Here stands the 13th lock on the Somme, built in 1826 and severely damaged during the First World War, as Sailly-Laurette served as a rear-area base for the Somme front.Unfortunately for the village, Sailly-Laurette was a key crossing point over the Somme; the Spanish burned it down the first time in 1636 while attempting to capture Corbie. In 1871, the village was looted by the Prussians, only to be destroyed less than half a century later during the Battle of the Somme.WILFRED OWEN 1893–1918A memorial stele stands near the lock, dedicated to Wilfred Owen, one of the greatest English poets of the 20th century. In 1915, he enlisted in a volunteer regiment that brought together artists from diverse backgrounds. Wounded in action in May 1917, he spent an afternoon on a steam tugboat while convalescing. A few months later, he wrote one of his most poignant poems: \*The Hospital Barge\*.Having taken part in the entire Battle of the Somme, he was killed on November 4, 1918, at Ors in the department Nord.At the time, the canal was used to transport troops and supplies between the front and the western Somme region. Barges were used to evacuate the wounded; while slower than trains, they offered a smoother ride, avoiding the jolts of rail travel. These barges could carry up to 300 wounded soldiers, who began receiving treatment on board—hence the name "hospital barges."
