Carré d’Art

Sleek center for art and learning, across the street from the Maison Carrée designed by Norman Foster. It is starting to show its age—one gallery was closed due to floor maintenance and one gallery ceiling was leaking, and the fabric shades on the roof hadn’t been cleaned of plant debris in a long time, but overall the space is clearly organized, functional, and not without the sort of high-tech panache Foster for which Foster has become known. The central staircase with glass treads is appealing, the detailing sure, and the gallery spaces well proportioned. Concrete ceiling details particularly well thought out, and any major investment in the cultural life blood of a city is to be admired and supported. Very friendly and helpful staff as well, not always given in France.

Summary: nice building, a pity about the contents. Interesting modern architecture and furniture by Norman Foster in very sensitive location opposite the Maison Carre - a bold but correct decision by the city planners in the 1980s ! Combines the public library, teaching / learning and exhibition spaces as well as a small, rather expensive rooftop restaurant with seasonal open air tables (all reserved when we visited). Definitely not a standard museum cafe... However, the permanent collection was disappointing - no works by major 19th or 20th century artists, what they have is one person's collection of rather similar conceptual artists that require your attention to read about them in French and understand the artist's rather narrow world view. Not art that is designed to communicate, let alone entertain or enthrall. Other conceptual artists like Carl Andre or Marcel Duchamp made their work accessible, but with deeper meaning if you read about their world views - I personally found this collection tedious by comparison.

Musée charmant avec une exposition temporaire photo très parlante. L'exposition permanente m'a beaucoup moins parlé, cependant le musée est accueillant avec un personnel très agréable.
Essayez de voir en fonction des artistes temporaires, ils amènent une réelle plus-value au musée.

Monument historique interessant. Personnel sympathique et bienveillant. Cependant je déplore le manque de moyens mis en place pour les malvoyants. Une version QR code avec lecture audio aurait été la bienvenue.

Inauguré en mai 1993 sur le site d’un ancien théâtre néoclassique détruit en 1952, le Carré d’Art a été conçu par l’architecte Norman Foster. Il dialogue avec la Maison Carrée, temple romain voisin, par sa structure en verre, béton et acier. Sa transparence et l’atrium lumineux évoquent les demeures traditionnelles de Nîmes. A visiter..
Le bâtiment s’élève sur neuf niveaux, dont les deux étages supérieurs (environ 2 000 m² au total) sont consacrés aux expositions : permanentes et temporaires. Il abrite près de 600 œuvres, couvrant des mouvements marquants du Sud de la France tels que le Nouveau Réalisme, Supports/Surfaces et la Figuration libre, ainsi que des courants internationaux comme l’Arte Povera, l’expressionnisme allemand (notamment Richter et Polke) et des artistes contemporains américains. Chaque année, la scénographie est repensée et deux à cinq expositions temporaires de prestige sont organisées.
Aujourd’hui, le Carré d’Art poursuit son rôle d’équipement culturel régional majeur. Il comprend un musée, une médiathèque, une bibliothèque, un auditorium de 164 places, une librairie et un restaurant. Il accueille environ 35 000 visiteurs par an. En mai 2023, il a célébré ses 30 ans avec une programmation riche et festive.
